This text goes as a reflection on the uses of the concept of mimesis as the core of Adorno’s thought. It starts with the proposals of the Dialectic of the Enlightenment, and then refers them to the way in which they reappear in the Aesthetic Theory, distinguishing the role of mimesis in he process of the production of the work and in that of its reception, both in art as in mass culture. Behavioral interventions have shown promising neuroprotective effects, but the cascade of molecular, brain and behavioral changes involved in these benefits remains poorly understood. Projecte Moviment is a 12-week multi-domain, single-blind, proof-of-concept randomized controlled trial examining the cognitive effect and underlying mechanisms of an aerobic exercise, computerized cognitive training and a combined groups compared to a waitlist control group. Adherence was > 80% for 82/109 participants recruited. In this study we report intervention-related changes in plasma biomarkers and structural-MRI and how they (...) related to changes in physical activity and individual variables and their potential role as mediators in the cognitive changes. Our results show that although there were no significant changes in molecular biomarker concentrations in any intervention group, changes in ICAM-1 and SDF1-α were negatively associated with changes in physical activity outcomes in AE and COMB groups. Brain volume changes were found in the CCT showing a significant increase in precuneus volume. Sex moderated the brain volume change in the AE and COMB groups, suggesting that men may benefit more than women. Changes in molecular biomarkers and brain volumes did not significantly mediate the cognitive-related benefits found previously for any group. This study shows crucial initial molecular and brain volume changes related to lifestyle interventions at early stages and highlights the value of examining activity parameters, individual difference characteristics and using a multi-level analysis approach to address these questions. Purpose The purpose of this paper is two-fold. First, it explores the extent to which diversity of connectivity or the connection through multiple internet access points may facilitate online privacy behavior. Second, it explains the diversity of connectivity-online privacy behavior link in terms of information literacy. Design/methodology/approach Situated in the context of urban poor youth in the Philippines, this paper used a quantitative approach, specifically an interview-administered survey technique. Respondents were from three cities in Metro Manila. To test for indirect (...) relationship, survey data were analyzed using bootstrapping technique via SPSS macro PROCESS. Findings Urban poor youth with diversified connection to the internet engaged in online privacy behavior. The more the youth are connected to the internet through diverse modalities, the more this fosters cautious online privacy behavior. In addition, information literacy explained how diversity of connectivity facilitated online privacy behavior. It suggests that differences in online privacy behavior may result from the extent of basic know-how of navigating online information. In the context of the urban poor in the Global South, the youth are constantly negotiating ways to not only connect to the internet but also acquire digital skills necessary for protective online behaviors. Originality/value To date, this is one of the few papers to contribute to conversations about online privacy among youth in the Global South. It broadens the literature on social determinants of online privacy behavior that is crucial for designing policy interventions for those in the margins. (shrink)

Trump, Duterte, Putin, Modi, as well as the leaders of Europe's neo-fascist racists have in common not just certain policies and attitudes, but, significantly, a political style: that of the demagogue. Thinking through that term, ‘demagogue', is instructive in helping us to understand this phenomenon, no less historically than (...) politically. (shrink)

La celebración del segundo centenario del nacimiento de Ch. Darwin, no puede por menos de renovar la problemática teológica, asociada a esta revolución científica. Aceptado el hecho de la evolución filogenética, incluso con respecto al cuerpo humano y al origen del hombre sobre la tierra , ello no resuelve todos los problemas, sino que los hace aparecer a partir de esa aceptación, que es, por lo demás, ineludible. Especialmente el del dogma sobre el pecado original. Algunos, para salir del atolladero, (...) se decantan por suprimir sin más tal dogma o dejarlo de lado, olvidarlo. Es como eliminar el problema, pero sin solucionarlo. El autor cree que ese dogma es una parte innegable de la dogmática cristiana, según los cánones del Concilio Trento. Pero lo que allí se define es su existencia, la existencia de “un pecado” de origen. No se define su naturaleza. Partiendo de esto, podemos obtener una nueva visión y comprensión del dogma, incluso más positiva, y que se ajuste mejor tanto a otros dogmas de fe, como a los conocimientos que actualmente tenemos acerca del origen del hombre. The aim of this article is to analyze Lonergan’s criteria of truth, which is the absence of further pertinent questions. This position is compared with that defended by Habermas in his book Truth and Justification, in which he abandoned the consensual theory of truth, in order to adopt a truth called for him “pragmatic”. In both positions there is a distinction between factual judgments which could be made in the common sense realm of meaning, and in scientific propositions in which (...) it is not possible to reach certainty. Este problema consiste en la constitución “patológica” de la experiencia del cuerpo. En esta línea se argumentará a favor del papel principal que este asunto juega en el origen del psicoanálisis y se expondrá la manera en que el mismo tema puede ser abordado desde una (...) perspectiva fenomenológica, que trasciende la alternancia entre las aproximaciones fisiológicas y psicológicas. From a phenomenological perspective, this article will try to deal with the problematic issue that forced Sigmund Freud to move from the field of physiology to the field of the psycho-pathology, which gave birth to the discipline known as psychoanalysis. These range of problems, deal with the constitution of a “pathologic” experience of the body. On this issue, it will be argued on the essential role it has in the origin of psychoanalysis and it will be shown how this same issue can be understood from a phenomenological perspective, which will transcend the dichotomy between a physiological and psychological approach. Pariendo del "dictum de Alexander", "ser es tener poderes causales" se puede concluir que, en lo tocante a propiedades, no puede haber en el mundo más que magnitudes físicas, pues sólo ellas entran en relaciones causales. Este argumento, sin embargo, es demasiado simple; en este artículo analizo una manera mas sutil y convincente de apoyar un fisicismo fuerte (...) con las teoría de Cantidades Conservadas (QC) de Salmon y Dowe. En la literatura filosófica de las últimas décadas, existen numerosos argumentos orientados a demostrar que las propiedades fenoménicas, los qualia, no son integrables en el mundo natural. En este trabajo se sugiere que una gran familia de ellos, los basados en una simple distinción no especificada entre las propiedades naturales y las propiedades fenoménicas, carece de la fuerza necesaria para apoyar las intuiciones dualistas.

The by now famous exclusion problem for mental causation admits only one possible solution, as far as I can see, namely: that mental and physical properties are linked by a vertical relation. ABSTRACT: According to a model defended by some authors, dispositional predicates, or concepts, can be legiti- mately used in causal explanations, but such a use is not necessary. For every explanation couched in dispo- sitional terms, there is always a better, and complete, explanation that makes use of a different vocabulary, that of categorial bases. In what follows, I will develop this view, and then argue that there is a kind of use of dispositions in explanations that does not fall (...) within this model. In the present study we asked whether it is possible to decode personality traits from resting state EEG data. EEG was recorded from a large sample of subjects (n=289) who had answered questionnaires measuring personality trait scores of the 5 dimensions as well as the 10 subordinate aspects of the Big Five. Machine learning algorithms were used to build a classifier to predict each personality trait from power spectra of the resting state EEG data. The results indicate that the five (...) dimensions as well as their subordinate aspects could not be predicted from the resting state EEG data. Finally, to demonstrate that this result is not due to systematic algorithmic or implementation mistakes the same methods were used to successfully classify whether the subject had eyes open or closed. These results indicate that the extraction of personality traits from the power spectra of resting state EEG is extremely noisy, if possible at all. (shrink)

After Wittgenstein's criticism of foundationalism, it is common use to defend the prevalence of action or of practical reason over the theoretical outlook at the world. The substitution of human praxis in the world for a set of self-evident propositions as foundations of theoretical knowledge seems to imply a radical form of pragmatism. Against this view, and recording some ideas of Vico, the paper claims that the rebuttal of Descartes' epistemological theory of the spectator does not imply any kind of (...) pragmatism. (shrink)
